  • Brand new newbie needs advice please...

    Hi Forum Users!

I was diagnosed with OSA about 8/9 years ago (being born with it in all likelyhood), as being caused by oversized tonsils. I was originally told that a tonsillectomy should stop the problem, but if not then I would need to use a CPAP machine.

8 years of being thoroughly messed about by my local hospital (all in an effort to reduce their waiting list figures I'm certain - if you want more info then please ask me) and them then 'losing' all previous records(!) I finally had another sleep study, which has led to me trialling CPAP as apparently (according to my new consultant) 'nobody EVER operates for OSA'...

The trial started 6 nights ago. When I was fitted with the mask (full face as I have a beard, move about a lot, and have sinus/nasal problems) I was told I am 'between a medium and a small' for sizing of the mask liner and so was recommended the small.

1st night was OK, although my sleep was very broken - I put this down to not being used to it - and even only getting about 5 hours sleep I felt more energised than I could remember, and I came to in the morning really quickly. I was dead chuffed! (upon reflection this may have been a placebo effect possibly?)

For the next couple of nights my sleep was still broken, and I found myself waking and gasping for breath - virtually ripping the mask off in the process! I also noticed that the mask leaked where my jaw would drop down.

A couple of nights ago I changed the liner for the medium, and to start with it was much more comfortable, but in order to prevent leaks with the slightest movement, I had to tighten the headstraps so much I got a severe red mark round my nose/mouth and the bridge of my nose is still sore!

Last night I just couldn't get comfortable with it, so ended up not using it (I get fristrated with lack of sleep!). Now today I feel crap!

I am certain that it is helping, and am planning to go back to the small liner, but wondered if anyone else had experienced similar and had any advice?

Many, many thanks in advance for all suggestions!
