  • US Products Challenge

No doubt most of you have come across cpaptalk.com, the busiest American CPAP focussed community, run and operated by that big US shop cpap.com.

Because it's such a big company with a massive community, they are in a unique position where they can gather tons of valuable feedback from real users. They're a bit like our little group here times a million. With this great reach they came up with the Product Challenge and they just completed the first one.

The Product Challenge works like this. They accept XYZ company's product for a test in which it will be pitched against that product's nearest competitor. Users of that competitor get a freebie sent of the challenger and fill out a survey after extensive use. The results get published.

It's a great concept for innovative companies to introduce their products with a bang and knock the big boys off their socks. I loved the idea and have followed it closely. Obviously, it's all focussed on the US market, with products that might not always be here, but it's very interesting and entertaining nontheless.

So the first results are in
. RespCare donated 50 of their Bravo nasal pillow masks in a bid to prove they're better than nearest rivals ResMed with their popular Swift II. The public decided otherwise. In an ironic twist, the Swift II was voted better than the Bravo by some margin.

Hopefully they now try to take on board the feedback and improve the design.

The Bravo isn't available here so none of us risk getting one.

I'm looking forward to the next Product Challenge myself.

You can read more about all this and follow future Challenges here:

When we're as big a community as they are, who knows, perhaps we can organise something similar. What do you think of the concept and their implementation? And do you think companies will be put off by the outcome of this first one where the challenger actually 'lost'?

This is an interesting idea, consumer test on the cheap. This is probably a better system then produce a product, release it, only to find its crap. This way the feed back is from real users, hopefully the designer will have taken on this feed back to make a better product next time.

As you say the potential negative publicity would make some companies think twice about participating publicly. Mind you, I will always try out a free product for a generous company.
    Regards and Good Luck, Barry

Yeah they risk loosing some of their reputation but on the other hand, especially with brand new products, it does get the name out and they can be seen to proactively seek customer feedback which they can then demonstrate to take on board. If they now come with a Bravo II within 6 months, I'd have high hopes and great respect for that company.

The consumer driven focus is what's appealing about it. As oppose to making a cheap model for maximum profit, they now have to be on top of things to avoid this type of customer feedback. And when you win said challenge, the benefits are huge. Well worth donating 50 masks for.

It goes to show how big their community is when they can dig out 50 users of any type of mask for these trials. Here on cpap.co.uk there might be 2 or 3 with the same mask and that will either be a ResMed or Respironics - none of the exotic ones. Hopefully we get some more choice and many more members here to compare notes with (I'm relying on all of you recruiting fellow hoseheads ).
