  • Resmed Liberty Mask

    Hiya...

Along with my new Resmed S9 CPAP machine I also got the new thin climate control hose and Liberty mask. I have been using the Quattro full face range for a while now and each new version has improved on what was a good mask anyway. The early ones were a little fragile but the latest one is fine and Resmed do offer fantastic support.

The Liberty is unusual in that it divides into two sections, the mouth bit and two nasal pipes for the nose. Firstly, and it might be my putting it on incorrectly, it has a plastic section on each side that makes it a little sore to get over your head and while the mouth part of the mask is easy to sort out I'm not getting on so good with the two nasal bits. The nasal bit is a small silicone (i'm guessing) tapered tube that goes into the nostril a little way with a soft "washer" that rests against the edge of the nostril to stop it going in too far. They are angled to fit snugly but I find them difficult to fit straightaway. They seem to move a bit and it can be quite a job getting them to fit as they should. I had no training with the mask so it has been a teach yourself job unfortunately. When the mask is fitted corrently it is pretty good as it doesn't feel so encompassing as my Resmed Quattro full face mask. I've been using it about 3 weeks now and so far I prefer the comfort and fit of the Quattro over the Liberty. I shall persevere I guess...

Anyone who has one that they are really happy with is welcome to offer suggestions to help me with the Liberty.

    nasal tubes

Its worth experimenting with the different size tubes that come with the mask; to see which gives the best fit. Don't just guess which size your nose is!

This mask has the best venting arrangement of any I've used; its such a pity they didn't use something similar on the new Quattro FX.

Getting the headgear properly adjusted (6 adjustment points) is a real faff and probably best done with help.

Youtube is a pretty good resource for help fitting, and to find more about the mask before you buy it.

I think I'm going to return the mask as I just can't get on with it. The nasal pillows seem to either move during the night causing massive air leaks, or they just touch inside my nose and are causing irritation or the extension hose comes off the elbow during the night. I'm just fed up with it.

My old "spare" S6 lives at my girlfriends with a Mirage Quattro and I have no trouble with it. I would like to get a new FX but I need to check whether it's available on the NHS yet.
