If I'm not mistaken ....

On the grounds that I'm aware of no other, I've always assumed that you refer to a Quattro full face mask - in your posts and in your signature. Yet, you applied for a freebie nasal mask and now here you are speaking of 'sticking with a nasal mask'.

Please sort me out and ease my confusion. Which masks do you use?

Sores on the bridge of your nose with a Quattro have lead me to waffle ad nauseum about strap adjustments - for a full face mask.

Is there such a thing as a Quattro nasal?

I always considered myself a mouth breather because I have a severely re-arranged nose, but couldn't get on with a full face mask so had to learn to sleep by breathing through my nose. A now unavailable nasal pillow mask solved this for me, but when I was trying to teach myself to nose breathe I bought a chin strap.

They are pretty awful when you first try them on and are not cheap but I got used to it overnight and after a month it cured me of mouth breathing during sleep and I found I could stop using it. Now I only occasionally revert to having mouth leaks and just go back to the chin strap for a night and it sorts me out.

This doesn't mean it works for everyone of course, this was just my personal experience.

I have an obstruction in my nasal passage which causes me some problems but the docs are ignoring it and sorting my apnea which is more important. As far as the mask, I've been supplied with the face mask and now it's a case of waiting another 2 weeks for my next appointment at the hospital to see if they can make any adjustments to the pressure as it keeps waking me up with rasping from the edge of the mask. (The pressure is set at 90% according to the display) I've only had the machine about 3 weeks and am feeling more tired than ever! Once things settle down I'll give the nasal pillow another bash. I just want to iron out my problems with the machine until then.

I use both.
I use the Quattro probably because it was the first mask I had and apart from it making the bridge of my nose very sore and red it feels 'safe'.
Even with your carefully followed directions on making it fit I cannot get rid of the soreness. I don't use it all the time because the sleep technician told me not to use as I was getting a pressure sore.
Even after one night I have to use a consealer otherwise the red mark is extremely obvious and I look at fright!

I use the sleepweaver as a secondary mask but probably use them equally. I really like it but it does tend to fart and squeel a bit and it wakes me up which is why I use it with the Remzzz liner which helps a lot. I also have to use it with the soft strap liners that you kindly sent me as it tends to make my ears uncomfy.

I am a side sleeper for most part, I start off on my back but never seem to stay in one position for long.

I can use either equally as well, hence my request to trial the new mask as I like the sleepweaver but it still isn't perfect.
I guess I have an odd shaped face!

Your lovely long answer didn't answer my question but did confirm that I'm misunderstanding something.

Turns out I had the SleepWeaver wrong - I had it in a class of its own - 'Cloth' - rather than including it in the category its full name suggests - 'Nasal' - hence my mistake.

Thank you for the 'xx's'. My neice - Australian, 30 - sends 'xox' and no-one can tell me what it means - y'kmow, as opposed to 'xxx'. Do you know?

However, the antibiotics, inhalers and steroids have kicked in and I am back among the breathing again so will be using it tonight.

Are you fishing for a SinuPulse? We have enough feedback on those already you know But seriously, all of that going in when nature, with a gentle pump, can do the same. May have to send TF around for a demo!

I like xox and will use it from now on. I am so new that I don't have a machine or a face mask yet just severe sleep apnoea. Roll on 19 Feb for my next appointment with the sleep doc, maybe he will tell me what machine the French system will provide. I want to try the Sleep Weaver first after all I fart anyway so it shouldn't wake me up, right?

Hi Deplume, sure hope that you get off to a good start with the machine and mask. Some of us are lucky and hit the jack pot--I took well to mine the very first night, and slept like a log for the first time in years. Of course there are always going to be times when you'd like to throw it out the window, or when you take it off in your sleep. We all go through things from time to time. WIsh you luck. x Berneta

I hope you enjoy using your machine and mask. I took to CPAP therapy very well and indeed found it much easier to breathe. I have had great sleep since using CPAP and have lots of energy so now go to the leisure center regularly and take my tebitan terrier into the park each day.

Thanks for your welcoming words. I saw the specialist on the 17th, the man from the CPAP company came on the 18th and left a Resmed Autoset 9 and a Flexifit 405 Nasal mask. They seem to work well. Certainly I was amazed at the quietness of the machine itself. The mask was comfortable enough and the ensemble reduced my apnoeas from 37 an hour to 10 in the 9 hours I was using it. I had to get up about 4 times in the night for the dogs and other reasons but found it quite easy to refit and reseat the mask and with auto start on the machine didn't even have to press any buttons. I think I feel better today and certainly once in a while I have felt myself taking a much deeper breath than normal probably filling my lungs more than I have in ages. Time for bed again now. I hope I am going to be one of the lucky ones who settles down to therapy with no real problems. I was told by a surgeon after a car crash in 1990,"You can get used to just about anything in time." He's probably right.

That's great to hear - I settled in quickly with mine, probably with my OSA being at the more severe end of the scale and my tiredness was completely overbearing that getting into a deep sleep was long overdue and very welcoming.

Keep it up, I'm so much a better person now I can't imagine going back! And well done on getting an autoset machine!
