  • Buying from USA

I would like a relative to buy a mask in the States and bring it over on her next visit.
I think the problem is that she would need a prescription for it as I believe that is required. Also would she have to pay any duties on it when she brings it over.
    Thanks

Yes, she would need a prescription, but you could buy online and have her collect for you, or delivered to her....

I do not think you need to pay duty as it comes under "Medical Equipment", but best check to make sure with the company you are purchasing from.

Hi. I have been buying from the US for some years now. The companies there generally seem to give good service and prices are reasonable, though shipping costs can be high.

To avoid VAT etc there are some declarations you need to get the shipping company to include. If you are still interested I can go into more detail.

        VAT and Customs

        Hi silvercarper

If you search under 'import code' or the like and look for posts by yours truly, you'll soon find the import code for 'medical equipment' - it's tried and tested.

However, as your relative is carrying the mask with her, it could also be a gift and not attract VAT unlessthe value is too high, in which case open the plastic wrapper and it becomes second hand and has no VATable value.

Thirdly, just walk through Customs - especially if the plastic bag has been opened already.

My GP surgery says that a prescription can only be written for NHS supplied items.
How can I then get a prescription which I can send to the supplier???

            Hi,

You don't need a prescription for a mask, I bought one while on holiday in Las Vegas in June and the subject wasn't even mentioned.

              PAP Prescriptions in US

              Hi Everyone
Here in the states you only need a prescription for CPAP, etc--- if you intend for your insurance or Gov Medicare to pay for it. Even with the prescription you will have to pay a % of the cost yourself depending on your insurance plan. Some medical supply stores require a prescription, and some do not. You can buy them without restrictions from private sellers, ads in newpapers, etc. You can sometimes even get them used from someone on eBay (online) but the shipping would be high. As all shipping would be. I suggest getting supplies from home where you can have something replaced or worked on easily. I understand that some Respirionics are not sold outside the US--so not being a traveler myself--I can't tell you about going through customs. I do know that you need a prescription and/or Stamp of Approval as a Medical Device before boarding planes (and probably ships too) My Humidifier has a humidity sensor inside and outside and prevents Rainout--but I am told that it is one not sold outside the US. Our FDA is crazy--some medicines and devices can't pass customs and we can't legally import meds and some other things from Canada. Most people here want free trade with Canada. Esp on medications.
