what to do about dry mouth?

    Hi and welcome
I have a humidifier for my machine, this helps to stop my dry mouth, would it be worth asking the sleep lab for one? Mine is the Fischer and Paykel one and it's a heated one. It does make a difference if used correctly.

May I suggest ringing Resmed helpline? They are very helpful.

    Good Luck
    Gill

I have a humidifier for my machine, when I did the sleep study at the hospital they found I needed one, maybe this one is not working correctly? I do not know if it is heated. how do you tell?

        If it has .....

a flat silvery bottom and sits on a flat silvery pad with electrical wires connected - it's heated.

How much does the water level drop over-night - percentage of the starting depth, say.

apparently it is not heated, I called the company 2 weeks ago and still no answer, the water level does not go down much in the few hours I am able to tolerate it, usually 3 or 4, sometimes less.

Time to visit your Sleep Clinic

            Hi medube

Apart from moving house to a rain forest, a heated humidifier is the only way to help ease a dry mouth - hm! let's start again .....

Apart from breathing through your nose and/or moving house to a rain forest, a heated humidifier is the only way that I know to help ease a dry mouth. I wouldn't be without mine!

The NHS should supply one for you - may need a little encouragement, though.

In the meantime, you could try putting hot water into your un-heated (passover) humidifier - far from a perfect solution and will inevitably lead to rain-out till the water cools a bit - but it might help, especially if you renew the water every time you wake!

thanks for the suggestions, I am going to call the company again and see if I can get the heated humidifier, from the sounds , it looks like that might solve my problem, I sure hope so, and if they do not help me, maybe when I go to see the sleep doc in feb., he can suggest it for me.

                Dry Mouth

I have a working heated humidifier, yet still wake up with a dry mouth as my mask is a FP nose pillows system.

A chin strap would solve that Mr Stefan.

                      dryness

                      Hi all

I agree with the comments that a heated humidifier should solve the problem. It is also worth looking at how you breathe and what type of mask you have. If you breathe through your mouth and you use a nasal mask (standard nasal mask or nasal pillows), the CPAP machine will compensate by blowing with more volume, which will exacerbate any sensation of dryness. The increased the flow through any humidifier will also make it less effective, and you may need to look at using a chinstrap or a full face mask.

the guy that brought me my machine came out to check it yesterday, he thinks I will need a different machine, as THIS ONE DOES NOT GIVE ENOUGH HUMIDITY for me, he tried it several different ways and when it is not on my face, it heats fine, the minute I put it on, it stops heating as much. I have one of the new machines that just came out, there are about 200 of them out there, he was going to see another person after me for the same problem, so it looks like I might be getting a different kind, I would really like to see what it is like to get a good nights sleep again.
