  • TOP CLEANING TIP - Part 2

    Hi everyone

Thought I'd pass this cleaning method on having successfully used it myself.

We all know how hard it can be to get into every little crevice of a mask and I wanted to find a "deep clean" method to get a mask sterile easily again. I looked back at what we did when our children were small

Anyway I used a baby bottle sterislising tablet (Milton) in a slightly weaker solution of hot water (tablet recommends one tablet in 5 litres of cool water) I used it in 6 litres of water. Stripped the inserts off the mask and took the humidifier reservoir apart; immersed all day in solution. You would be amazed at how much crud this lifted off the mask!

The only slight down side is the rubber inserts go a pale white but this also happened when we used the solution for babies bottles so no real problem except cosmetic. Do check that your skin does not react badly with the solution (this is the main reason I diluted in more water for myself).

Rinsed off with hot water and allowed to drip dry (used small cotton buds in some of the deeper slots) - reassembled mask and humidifer parts.

This has been the only really successful way of removing the stale plastic smell so many have experienced, as that is not too pleasant I call it a great success.

This cleaning method may reduce the life of the rubber inserts but it is too soon to tell - my mask is still that originally purchased from ResMed (I have only had to have a new angle front clip replaced). So the mask has lasted longer than Papworth usually expect anyway. I'm going to do it again in three months as a "deep clean" routine.

Hope that you find this useful - post any results you find if you adopt it

    Take care - cheers

      Tablets

      Hey! sleepster

Milton is just a chemical cleaner for babies' formula bottles - seems it comes in tablet form as well as the liquid form I have (easy use). It's the same stuff that goes into swimming pools to keep the water clean and that gives the chlorine taste and smell - sodium hypochlorate. In Milton, it's only 2% by volume and has a lot of sodium chloride (table salt) besides.

Any formula bottle sterilizer will do you just fine. Make a weak solution and I recommend you don't clean the soft silicon parts this way.

No easy way to clean an Oz heated hose. The patent owner told me that one of the ways they tested them was to immerse in water, dry out and use.
Soaking them in water does no harm, he said - but obviously they must be completely and utterly dry before plugging them in again!!

I use a damp-with-water-and-detergent cloth to wipe the outside - takes the dust off. Holding the hose in a 'U', I carefully fill it with soapy water till not quite full. Then, with a thumb over each end, I raise one end, take thumb off upper end then permit a little water to escape from the lower end, taking care to squirt the water away from contact with hose cover. Reverse elevations, remove thumb, permit escape, de dah till water runs out. In this way, you can get water rushing back and forth six, eight times to clean the inside of the hose. Repeat with clean, fresh water a couple of times to rinse. Hang in inverted 'U' to dry.

        I use this stuff:

I bought it to clean the MAD I had before my CPAP machine. It cleans and freshens all the mask components very effectively.
