  • Hmm Many Masks...

    Hello...

Since starting CPAP for my moderate OSA about two and a half years ago, I have got through a fair number of masks. I started with Resmed nasal masks that although small and easy-fit, left me with a dry mouth. I was moved onto full masks and have managed to break two of these. The first Resmed Mirage had a very weak and awkward joint where the elbow fits on the face part. Also I found the plastic clip that locks the hose into the elbow would release itself. My last mask a Mirage Plus has had two problems. The adjuster on the pad that rests on the forehead would not stay up due to a tiny piece of plastic snapping off, although I could get around that, as it was ok once on. However, then the plastic clip that holds the cushion on the mask snapped as well and this is much more problematic as the mask invariable slides about. Recently I received the rather fancy looking Resmed Quattro.. I shall see how it goes tonight.

My problems with the full face masks are few really... After putting a mask on I invariable get an itchy nose that simply must be scratched, but the real problem is the pressure of the mask on my teeth. The bottom of the mask tends to rest on my gum and puts pressure on it. I usually wake up with some soreness due to this. I note the Quattro sits a little lower so Im hoping this will go away.

I would not consider a nights sleep without CPAP now, despite it being very scary for children (although mine accept it), and embarrassing to be seen using one. Almost forgot, these masks are a nightmare if you travel abroad as they seem too weak to pack. My new one has come with a fancy bag so perhaps it will travel better.

Hi Mart and thanks for joining and and giving your feedback. Future and present readers will appreciate your testimonials!

I'm not very experienced with ResMed's products as I'm a bit of a Respironics fanboy. Never had much issues so never had an incentive to step over. But I'm sure ResMed make them as good. It keeps amazing me though that these manufacturers insist on the weird parts that just by the look of it you know the bits that stick out won't be bale to withstand the force of tussling around for much longer than a few months.

As far as your gum pressure is concerned, have you tried reducing the tightness of the headgear at all? It may still offer a solid seal with less pressure.

Travel has been an issue for years and luckily the packaging/bags provided by the main manufacturers have improved a lot. Where I remember the old Respironics masks just came in a vacuum sealed plastic bag, the latest one I got came in a fancy reusable zip bag. Much neater to stow it away or carry the mask with you on holidays.

Thanks for dropping in! I'm sure we can exchange some tips every now and then!

It's busy on a Fridy aafternoon. What happened to pub time?

      Welcome Marty!

You mention mild OSA; do you remember the number of apnoea's an hour you get or does your machine still track them?

As you might have guessed by my name, I'm a full face mask user too. I use the Comfort Full from Resperonics though I'm going to check out the one you mention, as I like to have a spare handy, especially when travelling as you never know what happens! And indeed, parts can always break at any point and doing without CPAP for a night will do my head in. I'd rather pay for a spare and rest assured!
      If you can read this...
...at least you seem to be getting enough sleep to stay awake and alert!

        Hey Admin.. and MB..

I found the Resmed masks to have weird easy-to-break bits sticking out everywhere, but this new Quattro looks a bit more robust. I didn't have any say in the machine, I understand having seen the web site that it is the basic S6 lightweight without any of the fancy bits. They do one that has a visual display of pressure etc.. But, of course, I didn't get that one. I assume the S6 is getting on a bit as it seems the S8 is the current model.

After my sleep test i was told some figures that elude me now but the Consultant told me my OSA was moderate. Certainly it makes a huge difference to me, I would often find i was falling asleep driving and blaming sugar drops.. If anything I would get the pressure marginally increased and get a humidifier as the air does "dry me out somewhat". I use the machine every night without fail and with a full face mask (unless i break another and the nasal mask is a poor spare).

          Quattro...

Ok, thumbs up on the Quattro.

This mask feels lighter and the cushion feels softer on the face. Definately it needs less pressure to maintain position and it does compensate for jaw drop, something i'm sure our full face users suffer with a lot..!

Whether is copes with my sleep thrashing etc.. is anyones guess.

              Hi again,

Well i have been using this quattro mask for a good while and yes I am very pleased with it. It is a huge improvement on the last one, mainly due to the much better cushion that fits with a much lighter pressure. Overall I think the straps fit better too and the whole thing feels more robust. The big problem for me was the pressure on my teeth, it was making my gum sore... but that is resolved.

One small issue with it... On my old mask the hose fitted on the mask via a curved tube that was a loose fit to the front of the mask. This meant that it moved about fairly easily when I moved in bed. It was a weak area in the mask so they fixed it on the quattro. Now the mask fits with a tight rotating joint that has no free-play. Its more fiddly and the hose doesn't move as freely.. but its not a huge thing..

              So a vast improvment...!

Could you perhaps lubricate it with a water based lubricant (not oil based as it will eat away at the mask I guess).

What happened re. your driving licence? Did the DVLA take long to decide?

                    Hi,

Sorry to hear about your problems with the quattro.. Well my experience with it hasn't been all good. Still the cushion is better, still i don't have the teeth pressure problems any more. However the mask does seem to have a lot of leak spots and I'm sure some machines would be able to point that out. Some of these places I'm sure are intentional but it does really blow out onto my eyes sometimes as there is are pressure relief holes in the top. My main problem with the mask at the moment is a rash that I get either side of my nose. It's like having two lines of dry skin that are very pink. I have stepped up my cleaning regimen (as I haven't been the greatest observer of the once a week wash) and we will see what happens.

Given everything I still rate this mask over the mirage. BTW if yours has a serious problem get back to Resmed. I'm pretty sure they will be very helpful especially given the price of these masks... They cost a fortune, and if it was a stereo not working we would be straight back!

                    Mart.
