  • People's first reaction seeing you with your mask!

Just for a wee bit of fun this time, what did your spouse say the first time you put on the mask?

We've all heard the Darth Vader comments but there must be some variations on that theme.

I personally thought my hubby looked like an elephant!

I was living in the back room of my friends house for a while and unfortunately it was also the room where his kids kept their games consoles. So every morning his three kids would appear to see me on a "Z" bed mask on face and machine on.

The feeling was horrible and I developed a system where I would sleep with my head under the cover so I couldn't be seen. Even now I would be reticent to use the mask in an open sleeping area... Bear in mind that I was sleeping in public areas quite often for about a year so you would think I would get over it.

When the sleep consultant told me about CPAP and that chances were that I would get better, he said the only down side was going to be the reaction my wife wil have: "She will have a good laugh!". Boy! was he wrong! When my wife first saw me with the mask she became quite upset. She saw me as someone on a life support respirator. Troubling...

Obviously for those who have had seen close relatives on life support ventilation at the end of their life, a CPAP patient can look like in deep sh**.

But having been wearing a mask for 2 weeks now and being very lucky to find it comfortable, I keep telling her that what she sees is not what I feel.

        So no laughs here...

        But I feel sooooo goooood!!!

Heres an idea, get your partner to use the machine and mask one night at the weekend. It may break down some of the fears, you never know they may also benefit from a good nights sleep!

NO WAY... I have been working hard to get to play with my mask... if she wants one, she can buy one herself!

Not a bad idea after all. I will give her 15 minutes.
