  • Humidifier HELP!!

I went to pour distilled water in my humidifier and felt the bottom of it..It was dry and has a coarse feel to it like it was burnt!Should I turn it off..Hope I haven't "Cooked it"

I should not worry - the humidifier has thermostatic control and it will be designed to switch off before any damage can occur.
You may also have a slight buildup of limescale - Once a month I clean my humidifier with a 25% sollution of distilled vinegar (white vinegar - 1 part vineger, three parts water) by filling it and letting it stand all day. Then before first use I rinse it with boilled water. This removes all traces of scale and leaves the humidifier clean, smooth and sterile.

      Try an electric tooth-brush!

      Hi sleepster

You can use an electric toothbrush to clean your humidifier reservoir I use a little mouth wash with boiled water works a treat and nice fresh smell when you rinse and refill before bedtime.

      Hope this helps

Thanks for the advice on getting rid of the limescale GrumpyBiker.

I've got the small, integrated humidifier for my Resmed ( I'm away from home at least 2 nights every week) but it has so many compartments and surfaces for limescale to build up ( and in East Anglia the water is pretty hard) that every day I'm rubbing soft scale off it.

I'd made up my mind to post here about ideas for cleaning it and there you were!

My wife has been using diluted white vinegar to de-scale kettles for years - it also works on taps etc. She also uses it to clean windows. Magic stuff and cheaper than most branded cleaners.

That dedpends on the slep clinic you attend...

I was told to use boiled water in mine. The reasons are varied, but the big enemy is bacteria. There are some very nast bugs that like warm, moist, aireated environments - legonella (legonaires disease) being one of them. Distilled water and freshly boiled (and cooled) water are both fairly clear of bacteria. In some areas, boiling the water will get rid of nearly all the limescale - in others it will not - it depends on the type of lime salts that are disolved in the water.

As any scale stays in the humidifier and, as I said above, this can easily be removed with vineager, boiled water works for me. I also consider it vital to empty the humidifer and rinse it out every day, to prevent a build-up of any bacteria in the humidifier.

Distilled water is good, boiled tap-water cheap and easy to find.

Andy is right, it largely depends on the water quality in your area and subsequently, how bad you feel about wearing out your humidifier. If you bought it yourself, and don't want to buy a new one every 2 years, you may want to use the very best, purest water you can find. If you come under the care of some organisation which maintains the unit for you, regardless of water quality, this may be less of an issue for you.

Damn, that is a good idea. I don't have an electric tooth brush but I will use my wifes manual toothbrush, which by the way is the one I clean my fishing tackle with to give mine a good scrubbing.

                        I got mine

                        Hi All

I was back at the clinic today for a review on my cpap and how its going.
Ive been given a humidifier now, as the air was freezing before and giving me dry mouth.
So i hope this helps, is their any major problems i should look out for?
in the manual it says use distilled water but i notice alot of you use cooled boiled water? so i really dont know which to use???
i will defo rinse it our every day and keep it clean.

                        x

                          Hi Debs
As has been said before the main issue is bacteria and cooled boiled water is great for this - we don't used distilled water for babies' bottles do we? It is more important to make sure you wash it daily and use fresh water. Most people would probably need a new chamber every couple of years anyway, you wouldn't need to replace the whole humidifier.

                          Hope this helps
