  • Beware Foam Matresses

I'm not sure if this is the right thread to post this but it is about the machine so here goes.

We have a small cabin cruiser and even before I was diagnosed, when I slept on the boat I always woke with a headache.

Last weekend we were on the boat and I awoke Saturday morning with the worst headache yet.
We had already eliminated any gas fumes etc and have always been mystified by this (No, too much alcohol was not consumed!)

I felt terrible for most of the day and in the evening we were discussing it and my other half said "I wonder if it is the foam?" The seating/matress is made of foam, so I said but I am not breathing in the foam as my air comes down a tube, Then it dawned on me the cpap machine sits on the opposite matress during the night.

So that night I sat the machine in its carry case and the next morning, no headache. It was also the same the next night.

I just thought I would pass this on as it is obviously important where or on what you sit the machine as to what you could be breathing in.

Older foam types and those that specifically need to repel water and or fire can be coated in sometimes toxic levels of chemicals. I'm sure that's what caused your headaches.

Modern foam mattresses, as in the ones purpose built for in-home use, tend to be free of these nasty chemicals. I used to be involved with selling those vacuum packed ones and remember studying the fire certificates and chemical sheets.

It's certainly a good idea to keep the air inlet of your CPAP away from sources of potentially polluted air. That often includes upholstery, the floor etc. It needs a clean environment for you to breathe easily.

I just shoved my machine in a corner and forgot about it. No telling what it is dredging up from under the bed.
