There doesn't seem to be any off/on switch on mine (Mirage Quattro S8) so I pull the plug every morning. Mind you I don't have water in mine but according to other threads I've read they recommend you freshen up the water reservoir every day anyway. I've been back to the hospital for a follow up appointment after having my CPAP for three weeks and they were still able to read the data on the card so the data is still retained evern if the machine is switched off

Please refresh my memory
Hi sleepster
Can you remind me what sort of machine you use, please?
I'm very interested in finding someone with an Apex humidifier and it sounds like you may have one.
Tigers FanRespironics REMstar 'M' Series APAP.
Resmed Mirage 'Quattro FX' Full Face Mask with a 'Quattro' headgear.

Many machines dont have a proper on / off switch, they merely remain in standby mode whilst they are plugged in. The main reason for this is to maintain the small internal battery which operates the clock and records the various user parameters. Dont worry about it, mine has been permanently plugged in and switched on for the last 15 months without problem. It doesnt get hot or do anything nasty. I also have an aussie heated hose which I normally unplug from the power suppy connector in the morning as this is handy to get at. I do not however switch off the power supply which is very similar to the ones used to power electric door bells and is designed to be left on. I have on occasions forgotten to unplug the hose and it has been left on without air blowing through it for about 15 hours without problem. It does not over heat.

I think you are reffering to the mask and not the machine. Read the book and the water needs to be changed each day with distilled water. The mist is going into your lungs. Lots of chemicals in tap water.Originally posted by Armageddon View PostHi Sleepster

Pull the Plug Out Is the Simple Solution
Hi Sleepster
Like you I just pull out the plug into the back of my Remstar - works a treat simply push back in when climbing back into the sack
In the morning I check the hours register total and pull the plug out
I have the humidifier addition but use a mix of boiled tap water and battery top up water in it - many on the forum think that this is not good
- but it works for me and I live in a ultra-hard water area of the UK
I also do not keep changing the water just top it up when the reservoir gets low.
Hopefully this is of assistance - take care of yourself - happy sleeping!

I'm not sure if you meant to reply to another thread but in reply to your comment I can say that I'm not referring to the mask and I am referring to the machine. I don't have a water reservoir in my machine. I don't think there is a massive amount of chemicals in tap water and the chlorine which is added will boil off. They mainly use filters to clean our drinking water and don't add lots of chemicals or so I've been told

Bacteria - UK Water Purification - Some Points
I have just changed my water just to keep you lovely people happy - used pre-boiled water and filtered it myself through a coffee filter paper and a tea strainer as I cannot get distilled water around here at the moment.
As an engineer in the water sector industry I do know what goes into water treatment and so few realise how many different chemicals, resins and processes are used to give the high quality water we have in the UK. The UK market has some of the highest water quality standards anywhere in the world and dispite the odd well publicised failures we generally take it for granted that when we turn on the tap it will provide clean drinking water.
However there is still a natural balance of good bacteria and trace elements in all water and in the natural air we breathe in as water vapour. Many scientific studies have lead to a greater understanding that we need these normal / good bacteria and trace elements.
I am a firm believer that in certain cases we "clean too much" so our bodies cannot build enough natural immunity - most immunisation programmes give a trace element of the problem so the body builds a white blood cell to fight it thereby if that trace gets into our system in future the body recognises it and immediately starts successfully fighting it off.
Welcome to our sterile world when everything gets cleaned so much that the body cannot do what it was designed to do. Of coarse there are exceptions to this - places where lots of people gather (such as hospitals) but each of us has built up an internal defense army based on our surroundings and that includes water.
Perhaps you have gone on holiday to a clean country with good water standards yet for the first few days you get a slightly upset stomach - your system is adjusting to water it has not tasted previously with trace elements it may not always have a defense for - hence the dicky tummy.
So yes I accept we need to clean things out but not to obsessed levels!
Anyway enough of me what does everyone else think?
