  • A little tip for us high pressure users

    Hey all.

Just a little tip to share. (Or at least it helped me).

I have to have my CPAP up high 14.5+ (If i leave it on auto it runs at 19.5 ) - i've turned it down a bit.

    But now to the tip....

At higher pressure you really have to strap the masks on (or it's raspberry time) trouble is when the cpap machine is first on - the mask really hurts.

What struck me is that when it's turned up it pushes away from the face more...(And so doesn't cut into my face). So i now have my CPAP set to start at 9.5 that way it pushes the mask from my face and hurts a lot less - but it's easier to cope with than a force 14.5 gale.

    Nice one

    Hi Chelseauk

What a great idea! Simple and effective. I've reset my ramp and tightened my straps - as for tonight - Thar she blows!

      A Mask under pressure

I use a ventilator every night rather than a CPAP, and the pressure is somewhere around 35mbars. I have a full-face mask and at this sort of pressure it is impossible to make the seal between the mask and my face completely air-tight without inflicting terrible pain and probably crushing my skull!

After a good deal of trial and error, I have found the ideal product to overcome this problem.

You need a 'gasket' between the outline of the mask and where it fits onto your face. I found that a piece of 'Mepilex' surgical dressing is ideal for the job.

This is used after surgery to protect the wound-site; it comes in 15cm square sheets, 5 to a box, and it has one side adhesive. To cut the Mepilex to the shape you need, first make a template in card of the outline of the mask. Place the template over a Mepilex sheet and draw round the outline.

Then cut out the shape you've made and fix it to the shape of the face-mask, placing the adhesive side onto the rubber of the mask. This will give a comfortable, almost air-tight seal that is very comfortable to wear all night.

Each sheet of Mepilex should last a week, and they are obtainable from the pharmacist in the normal way.
