  • Help needed with CPAP settings

As a recently diagnosed OSA sufferer, I've spent the last 8 nights with a RESMED S8 EScape.

It's been set up at 4 , ramping to 8 after 30 minutes.

I'm now getting used to sleeping with the mask, and I think I'm getting a reasonable nights sleep.

However, I don't feel any different yet, I'm still as tired as ever.

Could it be that the settings are two low, and it's not keeping my airways open as it should be.

    Any ideas

    Derek.

    Hi Derek,

    Welcome to the forums.

8 Is probably below average but it obviously depends on your needs. Do you remember your apnoea index from your sleep study?

Also, initial results can often be quite subtle with the major energy boost coming around week two. Best indicators of success normally include not finding yourself nodding off in the latter stages of the day.

They normally check the machine's compliance data after the initial trial to see whether it worked well or not. Give it some time and see what they say.

CPAP isn't an overnight fix after suffering form years. Sleep apnoea is quite complex, the body will need time.

My score was 25 per hour.
I've turned up the machine to 6 and 10.

Will let you know how I get on

I left the sleep clinic with a CPAP 3 weeks ago set at 6. Found it difficult to breathe and suffered a stuffy nose. After one week issued with the latest ResMed APAP and H3i humidifier which clearly shows I average 11.4.

It has taken over two weeks for me to get a good nights sleep and I can now say that I find the whole thing quite comfortable. After years of nasal congestion I actually can now breathe when I go to sleep. Each morning I am able to check the clinicians results to see how many AIs and HIs I have had. The reduction is dramatic.

I have been told by my clinic that nasal congestion and cold type symptoms are caused by leaky masks or mouth opening whilst using the CPAP/APAP.

        Good luck

Hi enfielder, is your machine about to go into Auto mode? might worth asking your sleep centre. My fixed pressure was 15, but since I now have an Resmed Autoset Spirit II it normally stabilizes around 18 throughout the night because its worked out itself thats what I need. Smart little piece of equipment :-)
