  • Replacing CPAP machines on the NHS

    Good afternoon,

Quick question, if I was to accidentally drop my CPAP machine resulting in its obvious destruction, would the NHS replace it or would I have to pay for one?

I haven't dropped it but it's handy to know just in case!

    Thanks,
    Ewan

Think they will replace it as long as they have a spare but I have mine under my house insurance and travel insurance............I'm an optimist.

I would imagine that it would vary Trust to Trust - as with everything NHS.

I've had my machine for over 5 years. My NHS Trust has updated the machines it uses and have just agreed to replace my old one. At first they said I would have to buy one at a reduced rate of £250 but after some pleading agreed I could have it for free.

But what machines are we talking about?

OK, when diagnosed in 2004 I was given a resmed S6, and only replaced it when it became faulty in 2011 with a resmed S9 escape this is currently the main machine prescribed by my sleep clinic

I still have an old machine that looks like an old brick. But as long as it works and can take a knock (unlike some of the newer ones) I will keep it. Ok, it is not so quiet as some, but it is working. Touches wood.

                  Hi Ewan,

It is probably best to contact your NHS trust/hospital and ask them directly as each hospital has their own budget so it would depend on whether they would have the funding to replace your machine. As Poppy mentioned, you might be able to pay a discounted cost if your CPAP machine breaks.

Also, may I ask which CPAP machine you have? If it's the Transcend MiniCPAP machines, you can buy a Transcend base station to offer more support and stability - intus.pro/basetranscend

Alternatively, to avoid your tubing from pulling at your CPAP machine which could accidentally cause your CPAP machine to fall off your bedside table, you might want to consider a CPAP hose lift. The CPAP hose lift reduces the drag of tubing, as well as making sure your tubing doesn't get tangled in your furniture which could potentially cause your CPAP machine to fall. To find out more about the CPAP hose lift, visit intus.pro/hoseliftcpap

I hope that helps. If not, it's probably best to be extra cautious when using your CPAP machine to ensure that the possibility of it breaking is minimal.

                  Regards,
                  Ellen
