  • Another New CPAP Machine User

Hi All, I am a 69 year old male and I started my CPAP 'therapy' on 22nd Jan and I am amazed with the results. The machine is a Resmed S9 Escape set at 10cm H2o with a 30min ramp from 4cm H2O with a Resmed Mirage FX (medium) face mask.

On the first night I managed 6hr 20min in two sessions one 2hr 51min and second 3hrs 27mins with about a 30min break in the middle since then I have used it for a total of 138hrs 46mins giving an average nightly use of 8hr 19mins, longest was 9hrs 53mins. Most nights I do not wake, whereas before, my apnoeas woke me at least once or twice a night. Needless to say my wife is also not being disturbed by my snoring and apnoeas and is having good quality sleep for the first time in years.

Almost immediately I started to feel 'more alive' when I woke up, I just wish I had gone to the Dr's sooner. My apnoeas were moderate 27.7 per hour, my wife says I now do not make a noise and certainly do not stop breathing or have the 'fit' like symptoms.

The only problems I have are a dry throat, congested nose, sneezing when I wake up and due to us sleeping with the window open I find the air I am breathing very uncomfortable due to it being so cold. I have an appointment with the sleep clinic a week on Tuesday and hopefully they will supply me with a Resmed H5I heated humidifier, I understand from my GP that this should help. Sometime the mask leaks and wakes me but after a readjust I go to sleep again.

It is just a pity the S9 Escape only stores the usage data on the memory card, as I would have been very interested in the data the more expensive models store.

So although I have only been using it for 17 days I would recommend anyone who 'thinks' they may have sleep apnoea to go and get it checked out.

I will post after I get or don't a humidifier.

Hi and welcome to the forum! I'm so glad that you're finding your CPAP helping you - and your wife!

I would recommend the hose lift http://www.eu-pap.co.uk/cpap-hose-lift.html to make your sleep even better. I couldn't believe the difference it made to me.

Looking forward to hearing how you get on with your next appointment.
    Kind regards, Tricia

      Hi
Also you can get a lift hose from hope2sleep that is the same price which looks better than the one I got from EU-PAP. For some reason my just keeps collapsing on me.

Going to collect a humidifier on Friday, I am sure it will help resolve the few problems I am experiencing at the moment but I am using my CPAP machine over 8 hrs a night though.

Hi All, I've been using my humidifier now since 7th March and as I did not receive a heated pipe with it I purchased one myself. What a difference they have made, no blocked nose in the morning, no sneezing, no more nose bleeds and also no more cold air to cause discomfort it is great.

A lady at Resmed talked me through unlocking the setup menu in order to set the humidity and temperature separately, enabling me to 'fine tune' the machine.

However I have a bit of a problem my wife and I went on a short holiday to the Elan Valley in Wales and stupidly I broke my leg, now I have gone down from 8+ hrs a night to last night when it was just over 6 hrs. I hope in the not too distant future I can sleep as well as I did before my accident.

Hope the leg is healing well.

I've been on the hose for two months or so and got given a humidifier at my first check up appointment. I used it a for a couple of weeks but it didn't seem to improve the dry mouth at any of the settings, so I've stopped bothering with it. I've not got any of the other symptoms you mention and I rather like the 'frisson' of colder air the pump gives you.

After initial mask sealing probs I seem to have got that sorted and my AHI figure is running just under 5, down from the assessment figure of 16.

Bravo to you both (apart from breaking the leg) , it's always good to know folks are getting on well with the wee face hugger as anyone who is starting on Cpap is always a bit worried.
Andy, just a thought, keep the humidifier/heater option around, first winter I didn't use it one night it was like a two hour icecream burn up the sinus before I got up, filled the water tank and set it for warm nose hugs.

                  12 months Update

Well I've been using my CPAP machine for 12 months last and managed an average of 7.2 hrs / night which I think is quite good. I had a small hiccup last March after fracturing my left tibia and just recently due to having a cold. I started with a Quattro FX full face mask but changed to a Swift FX Nano nasal mask which allows me to lie on my side without dislodging the mask, the only problem I've had with this mask is as I said having a cold my nose gets blocked and I had to revert back to the Quattro.
Adding the humidifier made the treatment a lot more comfortable.
To anyone just starting with a CPAP machine, persevere it does not take long to get use to it and it will certainly feel the benefit.
As my original hospital is about 25 mile away I recently ask if it was possible to transfer to my local hospital, this is being arranged at the moment. There will be a change in equipment from Resmed's S9 Escape to a Philips Respironics System One, is there anyone on here using the Philips machine who can tell me the pros and cons of the machine?

                    Hi All,
                    Update :
I have my new machine, a Respironics REMstar Auto A-Flex with humidifier, it is great. The last 3 nights I have slept straight through for the first time in a few months and woke up feeling much brighter. I am using a Resmed Swift FX nasal pillow mask no leaks and very comfortable. My Dr has also given me a repeat prescription for 20 litres (1/3 litre per night) of sterile water every 2 months because of my age I do not have to pay for them. I was told I must not used boiled water, as I had been using in the Resmed humidifier.

                      Hi DraySoft

If you are in most places in England you need to use distilled water due to deposits building up.
I am up in Scotland and where there is not a lot of minerals in the water, however I often wonder what else there is in it that shouldn't be!
However I just use water straight from the tap and have had no trouble with it, but further south humidifier bottles can get furred up.
I assume the sterile water is just in case of bacteria?
Good to see you took so well to the xPAP machine, not all do take to them so readily.

                        Hi DraySoft and all,

If you need help deciding whether you need a humidifier, I would suggest reading our informative blog post - http://www.healthytips.co.uk/health-...cpaphumidifier

A humidifier can be essential for some user's therapy, and for others, just an expense that wasn't really necessary so I would advise reading the blog to find out whether or not you really require a humidifier.

If anyone has a DeVilbiss Blue CPAP machine, then you'll be pleased to know that the whole line has been heavily discounted, including the DeVilbiss Blue Humidifier - intus.pro/DeVilbissHeat

Head over to intus.pro/devilbissdiscount and see what the DeVilbiss Blue range has to offer. We all love a great discount!
