Help Sneezing all day from CPAP Machine

Hi All,
I have been using a Resmed CPAP machine for about a month. I can sleep fine with it but from the moment I wake up in the morning I don't stop sneezing all day. My nose is running all day and I look like I have an enormous cold or suffer from acute hay fever neither of which apply. Is this normal as it has become so difficult.

Well, I did mention to the clinic if they could give me a humidifier and they gave me two plastic clear pots and a tube which seemed rather basic compared to what I have seen on the web. To be honest I haven't tried filling the pots with water as the instructions actually said it may improve a little with the pots but not much.
I am currently so fed up. I've decided not to wear the mask tonight as fear I'll either stop breathing in the night or wear the mask and sneeze to death next day.
Does anyone have any advice. Can anyone recommend a better, more up-market humidifier than the two plastic pots with a tube. I'm so confused. If anyone has any advice at all I would be so grateful.

Hi Maggi,

If you can't get hold of the integrated humidifier for your machine (ie the one designed specifically for your machine) from your clinic then you could use a universal one.

The most popular one currently is the Fisher & Paykel HC150, which you'll notice is rather more advanced than what you've been given by the sounds of it!

Nasal irrigation may help too, either using a Neti pot or the more sophisticated Sinupulse machine. Don't worry, its not unpleasant!

Hi Guys,

Thank you SO much for taking the time to reply, my nose is driving me nuts. I have today ordered and bought the H5i humidifier which will hook up to the S9 escape that the NHS have loaned me. A really helpful person told me it will arrive by courier tomorrow. Now, the one thing I am still unsure about is, should I still purchase a 'Sinupulse' as well or will the H5i be sufficient. I really am suffering a lot with sneezing as well as going to sneeze then don't which I almost find worse. I am currently sneezing 10 - 12 times an hour, much more in the morning. I haven't used the cpap S9 for two days now yet I am still sneezing and have a blocked nose and runny eyes yet I don't and never have suffered from hay fever.

It is always best to change one thing at once, so I would give the humidifier a few days trial first before trying something else.

...Having said that, the Sinupulse is a great thing, and may be worth looking into anyway if.

I am eagerly awaiting the H5i & climate control humidifier tomorrow and will use it for a good while before adding to my collection of attachments. A huge thank you for your time.

My machine came with two filters, a black foam dust filter and a very fine white filter, the advice was not to bother with the white filter but I found seasonal use helpful and when replacing it it was dark grey in the centre with the stuff it stopped.

Hi Barely Awake, I do have a small white filter at the back of my Resmed S9 Escape. Should I take that out. My Resmed Humidifier was suppose to come today but City Link went to the wrong house and didn't leave the parcel Grrr!
My nose is still blocked and I'm still sneezing for England even though it is two nights since I used the CPAP and by process of elimination I know for sure that it is the CPAP machine causing the problem. I just can't wait to try the humidifier so I do hope they bring the parcel back tomorrow.
Thank you so much for advice and stuff. I'm the only one in my family to have sleep apnea so I have nobody to swap notes with.

Only your clinic can advise you, I wouldn't change anything on your kit without consulting them specifically if I were you. The white filter is very fine and catches what gets past the black filter so is there to reduce the dust and other tiny particles that would make users sneeze, I don't therefore think they would suggest removing it.

That is a good humidifier so should make a your nose feel better in the morning. Start at 3 and adjust up or down from there to suit your needs.
Avoid a cold bedroom as it may cause condinsation in the tube and mask (rainout it is commonly known as). If it is a sucessful you may want to order a spare container as the bottoms are quite thin and are not long before corrosion gets through the bottom of them. This varies from six months to just over a year. The older ones had a thicker bottom, but the plastic had a tendency to get dammaged when traveling.

Hi there Sleep,
Had the new humidifier for two nights now and I love it, love it, love it. I don't want to sound like an advert but together with the Resmed S9 escape it works a treat. The only thing now I would like to see is a read out of what is happening during the night. I don't think the S9 escape gives you a data read out so I will probably try to upgrade in the near future. Thanks for all the good advice here I'm certainly feeling better each day. I'm having a Tosca Sleep Study which involves an overnight stay in hospital on Monday 24th September so I will have a little more info on what's happening during the night then.
Oh well, onwards and upwards and as always thank you to you good people here.

S9 data

The S9 writes data to a smartcard which you should be able to read on your computer. All you need then is the ResScan software which you can find on the internet (sticky me if you need help).
