  • Clinicians manuals.

Most CPAP machines have a clinicians setup - which allows adjustments to pressures etc. now these are for your care providers.

But some of us are inquistive people and like to know how to drive our units (and to .. at the risk of getting our bottoms spanked by the hospitals) to fine tune things.

Now i've published similar before - So lets make this clear... YOU SHOULDN'T REALLY BE DOING THIS - IT's AT YOUR OWN RISK and ENGAGE BRAIN FIRST IN FACT THINK ABOUT TALKING TO THE HOSPITAL FIRST (that's the disclaimer over).

But i know some of us have had to finese the settings on the pressure - bottom line for me was compilance and machine effectiveness - my auto machine wanted to run at 19.5 - which is nasty (try keeping the mask on) I err broke into the machine and settled on 14.5 over a few nights - and both me and the hospital are happy (I expected to get told off) - but when i went back and admitted it - they didn't kill me. It probably helped that i had read around the subject well (via forums like this), made the changes for a reason and did so intelligently. In fact they were pretty happy that i was taking active part in my own care.

Right.. for anyone still with me.. I came accross this today - an article on the setups for CPAP with manuals.

So here's a link to setup instructions for most machines.

Great Link, I took the chance to down load and save the manuals just in case the site disappears.

I would also echo this statement.

I have changed my ramp start pressure from 4 to 5, but I did this for a specific reason. As I hyperventilating at 4.

Fantastic, thanks, that's really useful. I've been pressing various combinations of buttons trying to get my machine to reveal its secrets as I wanted to increase the ramp time but didn't want to make a trip to the hospital just for that.

Anything out there about S6 machines? I know it's old, and the sad thing is that the display is, hummmm, very limited. But I see a RJ45 socket on the side... if I were to connect it to my PC... what sort of software would I need?

              Hi guys

For the past 5 nights I have been using my new loaned ResMed S8 AutoSet Spirit II and H3iPlus humidifier with a set start up of 4 although I left the sleep clinic told I needed 6. I found 4 impossible to deal with when I woke in the night so called the clinic yesterday who talked me through the clinician's menu. Now have it set at a min of 7 and a max of 16 but find the machine is running at around 10.5 to 11 and I had a reasonable night last night.

It was extremely simple to adjust - Turn on and then off so Autoset 0 shows on LCD, hold RH button and down arrow together until Clinician menu appears on screen. Scroll down with arrows to pressure which will show the min, press change and use arrows to adjust and then exit.

I found the fixed 6 on the S6 difficult to deal with and quite honestly was keen to take a look at the machine to find out how it worked, but it was on loan and I knew a better machine would arrive so did not tamper with it. I shall certainly be buying my AutoSet Spirit and humidifier when pressed to pay.
              Cheers Retsyo

You know what all this seems to say to me...

A lot of CPAPers on this forum are really thoughtful people who want to be proactive and take a real part in the responsibilty for their own care.

And for that - you should all give yourselves a big pat on the back ! I am genuinely impressed !

Retsyo I hope you've found the right setting and your good nights start to outweigh the bad.
Thanks for posting that information . I believe we have the right to know the full potential of our machines and adjust settings to our own needs.
When you think of it, if we can make these small adjustments ourselves we don't have to take up the time of the staff at the sleep clinics therefore freeing them up and reducing waiting times. Maybe with all these tips we can have a section here dedicated to machine manuals.
                  Best regards
                  Andy

PS I see the American site doesn't like these details being published.

If someone "like what we are", has the gumption to find this forum to find out about whats up with them, then yes, get someone to pat you on your back. Because you are half way there to taking control of your health. Good on ya!

                      Great Work & True !!!
I also "discovered" how to access the Clinical Settings on My ResMed AutoScore 11 & with "fine tuning" I have improved my CPAP efficiency.
I told my CPAP retailer this but they were "horrified" -but on the otherhand when I told my Specialist Dr he said "good idea for helping your self". I had to because I only see my "very busy" Dr every 2 months
-Many thanks to the forum members to the very valuable help
