  • So bloated! Help!

Just finished my first week on CPAP and more air seems to go into my stomach than in my lungs it seems! The presure is on automatic, as I have MSA (mixed sleep apnoea). It gets really uncomfortable, and I feel like I'm going to blow up and explode (feeling very sorry for my partner!). Is there any advice anyone can give!? Is this just something I have to learn to live with? Going back to the sleep clinic in a week, but not sure if I can make it that long! BANG!

The bloating isn't unusual when you start with your CPAP unfortunately. It does get better

      Hiya,
As Fred said, it is common but it goes quite quickly, maybe about a week or 2 at the most.
Keep with it, you will get there!

      Good luck

I have been using CPAP for about six months and I was advised to drink peppermint tea to help with the bloating that I was getting and it did help. Thinking about it though it does seem to have receded as I don't feel bloated that often now. Keep on in there!

I've been informed that I have to post more often in order to get rid of that silly phrase next to my name! So I had better have something to say.
I had wondered what causes this bloating, and thought it may have been alcohol before bedtime. But since it has disappeared of late, it can't be that. So I can now relax with that Irish whiskey before retiring!

The cause is simply swallowing air (probably). as you are breathing slightly pressurised air, you are more likely to swallow air, and when you do you are likely to swallow more.

Why does it get better? I contest that as your body gets used to it, you will swallow less; my partner contests that I just expel more of it through the night!

                  Thank you all!

Thank you for your support. The bloating's all gone. I've just bought my own machine, and a humidifier - as lots of you say is good for dry mouth in the morning. Found a TINY battery pack that fits in my palm and lasts 10 hours - so I'm set to travel! I promise to pass all this great support forward. Xx
