  • my wife can not sleep because of the CPAP machine

    Hi All

My wife can't sleep when I use my CPAP machine because of the air noise any advise? I need to reduce the noise or else!

    Thanks

Hi Lillie1906, welcome to the forums!

Whilst louder than a normal bedroom environment CPAP should be a better option than continuous snoring and choking gasps for air. A lot of bedroom partners find the white noise like CPAP sound quite a relief and find it makes them sleepy within days.

How long have you been on CPAP?

Would she be open to trying ear plugs?

Also, if your machine has a ramp time feature, set it to the max time period to allow her to fall asleep before the 'storm' comes.

My other half found the machine noise odd at first, but as Joe said, he much prefers it to the weird snoring noises I apparently used to make pre-CPAP. The air blowing out of my mask onto him was more annoying than the noise, but he has solved that by covering his head and neck. We must look a right pair...good job no-one gets to see us at bedtime!

Regarding the air coming from the mask's exhaust, some mask models have an optional diffuser you could enquire about. Others again have been designed specifically to prevent air blowing on people nearby (some F&P models I remember stating this specific benefit).

Most of the noise comes from air rushing in the pipe. I found that by putting the tube inside a fleece wrap, the type used to help with rainout, the sound will be muffled.

Hi I am sure my partner will sympathise with your wife! I too have had a cpap machine for 10 years and over those years we have tried all sorts of different masks and ways to reduce the noise. Sadly I think I get more sleep than he does and is having all the symptoms that sufferers have due to me disturbing him. We don't want to have to resort to separate rooms, however, and I am for ever looking for ways to make the thing quieter. Going to try a sleepweaver mask next to see if that helps with the hissing, mouth blowing, etc. Good luck and let me know any tips you pick up! there should be a forum for partners. Jill x

Given the date this question was posted, something tells me that we shouldn't expect a reply from lillie any time soon...
