  • URGENT: I need a machine :)

    Hi guys. It's 4.30am and I've got a bit of a problem.

I flew into Newcastle yesterday and shortly after arriving my girlfriend dropped the bombshell that she'd forgotten to pack my CPAP machine. I was busy working so she packed and I basically grabbed my case and ran.

I tried to sleep without the CPAP for the first time and it's impossible, hence why I'm here at 4am.

First thing I'm going to do is contact my clinic at York Hospital to see if they can help me with a loan machine maybe as I'm going to be 3 days without one. Do you have any suggestions if I draw a blank as in terms of maybe buying one today?

I must sort something today. I'm in a bit of a panic. What I have learnt is to make sure I have a secondary machine because if mine ever packed in I'd be doomed. It's frightening really.

Thanks for any assistance you may be able to offer me

York called me just after 8am with a loan machine. They are fantastic there, they really care. Such nice people.

I'm definitely going to buy a 2nd machine after this experience incase my first machine fails.

Really glad York were able to sort you out.

I took the plunge and bought a second / standby / travelling machine just over a year ago, made sure it was one that would run efficiently on 12v and that it was compact and light to travel with, and certainly don't regret it:
      • I have one ready packed when I travel - I am away a lot on work
      • I have the reasurance that when my main machine packs in...
      • It is great (?) when there is a power cut!

I have had the experience of my machine failing, or forgetting something when I travel, and don't want it again!

Wait, you fly from York to Newcastle?

People always find out they REALLY rely on their CPAP when it's too late. When they loose it, forget it or when it breaks. Panic sets in. A second machine isn't a luxury.

Do you only buy one toilet roll at a time?

But a second machine is no good if you forget to bring that one too. Just leave it in your suitcase, ready!

PS If York hadn't been able to loan you one, we could have sent one today, for tomorrow. 2 Nights without. But great to hear it was resolved.

          No machine for one night

I used to find that, one night without a machine would mean, near dents getting petrol, the colour had gone form the world and taste smell, and me being grumpy.

Last time though it did not make much difference, as if years of body rebuilding from the machine means I can get by for a day.

However, I do remember the feelings of fear when finding I had taken the mask off in my sleep.

Do others get away with a night without the wonder box.

I don't think three days without would be a life threatening situation. Only in your head.

Very often. Most nights in fact. I frequently take the mask off in my sleep. I have always resented having to wear the bloody thing - though I admit that the few nights I manage to go through with it on, I do feel somewhat better during the day. Average compliance rates are only just over 4 hours per night. There are studies to back that up somewhere or other, so you may be the exception rather than the rule..

Can't knowingly sleep without mine, though will fall asleep if really tired then wake up remembering what it's like not to breathe.

If the wife is with me she'll wake me up as she's got used to the quiet nights!

Not life threatenening, for most, but devastating in as far as the business/holiday plans are concerned.
