Indeed you added an 's' - making a plural Tesco - instead of an apostrophe 's'. Seems you may be part of the reason English is ever more poorly spoken by school leavers.

You can't use "Tesco's" as a noun. You can only use it when you are indicating a possessive. Tesco is the name of the firm, as in "Tesco announces record profits" but no-one actually says "I am going to Tesco to do my shopping" -So my usage of Tescos was fine.

You are simply showing your ignorance now Tiger. Usage can lead to acceptance so one day maybe the apostrophe 's' will be a variant of the plural. Not just yet however.In any case if it is spoken you cannot tell the difference between "Tesco's" and "Tescos".

If you think that a word with an apostrophe can be used as a noun then you obviously buy "cabbage's" and "potato's". at the market. Your comments about my professional competence would be insulting if they were not risible.

Ah! unless you mean your original mis-quote. I said, "Look at supermarket bottled water a find a cheap, soft water (tend to be Scottish and Welsh but there are some English - Tesco's is English). You replied, "Tescos is English?
Why are they in Hong Kong, Thailand and China then?".

I fail to see where I have made comment on your professional competence. I asked a pertinent question, which you have answered to some extent with your assertion that "Usage can lead to acceptance so one day.....". Perhaps I'm being old fashioned in my belief that teachers are required to teach to a set standard. My thinking seems to be in-line with employers and universities who complain of school leavers not being competent in the Three Rs.

Supermarkets still have check-out lines for 'Ten items or less'. Does common usage make that alright in your Department?

The on-going dispute over which is the more grammatically correct: 'Ten items or less' or 'Ten items or fewer' has been largely played out with the introduction of the self-help check-outs that have suddenly sprung up.

Now we have the irritating voice that tells us 'Put the items in the bag' while we're doing our utmost to find the ruddy bags and then struggle to open them. Our cries of 'hang on a minute, love' go unheeded until she loses her patience and shouts: 'an assistant is coming'. There is only one assistant, and she's busy with the four other customers who can't figure it out either. It might have been quicker to go to a real live cashier.

Or the 'Baskets Only' line cashier who refuses to serve you because your goods (fewer than ten items) are in a trolley! What is a trolley but a large basket on wheels??

Who really cares that much about Tesco/Tesco's? We have a whole thread on whose right and who's wrong. Have you guys all got shares in Tesco? Gosh--I can think of a lot of words that I think need explaining " tease-maid" was a good one. And its looking "greise" over there. Greise?
