  • Unlocking the remstar.

Right ho - now this is entirely at your own risk ! and you may get told off by your hospital (That said i've just got back from my first visit and i'd unlocked mine and turned it down a bit) - and because my compliance was 100% and my AHI is just 2 ! They were happy !

But heres a link to an america forum with the details for the therapy menu on the remstars http://www.cpaptalk.com/viewtopic.ph...=asc&start=15-

and the text is reprinted below just in case it vanishes from the other forum. ( i can't remember the setup text bit - but this is what i used to change mine).

    REMstar Auto w/C-Flex Setup

When in the Setup Menu, the humidifier ^ and ramp v buttons operate as up and down keys to change the settings, the left/right user buttons < > allow you to go to the previous/next question or setting, and the pressure start/stop button is used to exit the Setup Menu. Holding the humidifier or ramp buttons down will cause the values to change more quickly.

To enter the Therapy Setup Menu, hold the two top user buttons < > down while plugging in the power cord.
Continue holding the buttons down until the REMstar Auto w/C-Flex beeps twice.

Note: The word "setup" will appear on all of the screens indicating that you are in the Therapy Setup Menu.
(If you press the Pressure start/stop button, you will exit the Setup Menu.)

    A. Compliance hours/nights: (recommend leaving alone, but CAN be cleared at this point)
    Select next setting with >

    B. Therapy mode: (CPAP/CFLE/APAP/AFLE) select with ^ or v
    Select next setting with >

B1. If CPAP or CFLE select pressure setting: Select with ^ or v
    Select next setting with >

B1a. C-Flex mode (if you chose CFLE mode): Select setting 1, 2 or 3 with ^
    Select next setting with >

B2. If APAP or AFLE, select minimum pressure setting: Select with ^ or v
    Select next setting with >

B2a. If APAP or AFLE, select maximum pressure setting: Select with ^ or v
    Select next setting with >

B2b. C-Flex mode (if you chose AFLE mode): Select setting 1, 2 or 3 with ^
    Select next setting with >

C: Ramp time setting: Select with ^ or v
(ramp time will be turned off with a setting of 0)
(if using APAP or AFLE mode, Ramp setting MUST be set to 0:00)
    Select next setting with >

    D. Ramp pressure setting: Select with ^ or v (use only in CPAP or CFLE mode)
    Select next setting with >

    Way cool, chelseauk, many thanks

Had a look at that site, the yanks are well in tune with OSA and their machines. Because everything goes through Insurance companies they are complaining that a wait of 3 weeks was too long! One Idea they had was a crib sheet for all the abbreviations. Joe, this may be an ideal sticky post.

Thanks to these instructions I upped the ramp start from 4 to 5, a lot better. I'll let it run at this for a while. But it may need upping to 5.5? I found a referance on the yank forum to a lot of people who find that 4 is not enough and 5 or 6 is the better setting. Many thanks again.

I set mine to start up on 10 and the ramp to drop it to 6 with a cap of 15 on the machine and that seems to suit nicely !

Remember that one guy's recommendation does not reflect your apnoea severity. That's why docs don't really want you to play with the settings. Having said that, it's not like it'll get you killed so playing with the settings within a certain margin should not be of any negative effect.

As we're not in the US, I guess I can do without saying "we are not in any way liable for peer to peer instructions. Nothing here should be construed as medical advice" blah blah. Summary: Don't sue me if anything goes wrong

Let me just echo that - in no way does any of this consitute advice. Setting of the CPAP machines is something for medically trained personal.

I had specific issues with both leakage, high settings and air swallowing and in changing the settings I did so with care and lots of personal monitoring of AHI and leakage rates and with the realisation that i was doing something that may not be approved of.

References to my setup are purely illistrative and do not in any way consitute recommedations or advice - that said turning it down did help my compliance at a time when i might have given up.

Bottom line is changing any settings are at your own risk and should not be done lightly.

Yes I do agree with both Joe and Chealseauk.

The settings that your machine has been set to by the techs at your providers, has been arrived at by recording your condition with and without a machine. Any changes made by you are at your own risk and are non medically recorded, tested and approved.

You will note that I have only changed the starting pressure on my ramp setting. This, I personally feel, does not affect the normal sleep running pressures which I would never change without medical supervision.

Remember that sleepiness can and does creep up on you, if your settings are not right!

I would be very dubious about changing any of my settings, as I am not medically trained, but the issue here really is that if you feel the pressure is not right you should contact your sleep clinic and be reassessed!
