  • CPAP and daytime breathing

    Hi All
I have been using the CPAP machine for over 10 days and I am glad to say that it is working for me.I had a few nights of difficulty but easily got used to the machine.
I have a easy life mask and a philips respironics machine.
I am able to have a good night sleep and no longer have symptons of fatigue, anxiety, mood swings etc.
However I am noticing that i am shallow breathing a lot during daytime.
Today I even went to the gym and did some cardio without too much stress just to make sure there is no major issue with my heart.
Is this kind of breathign something that one goes through when trying the CPAP.

I read on the forum that this due to the lung muscles expanding due to the pressure from CPAP and should settle down soon.

I have spent enough time and money visiting cardiologist,GPs,ENT that I really want to be sure before I go to a consultant.

    ANy help greatfully accepted.

    Hello and welcome!

My theory on this is that the ability for our lungs to exchange gases improves with the cpap keeping them more filled and open during the night, and your diaphragm is doing less work as well during the night.

I'm guessing (someone will come and either shoot me down or back me up) that our daytime breathing becomes easier and shallower because we're not straining at night!

      Day and Night

Hi, I don't know why--but my daytime breathing is not deep either. In fact the CPAP has me breathing a lot harder and therefore taking in more oxygen at night. Maybe I just saturate my lungs and bloodstream at night-- and don't need as much oxygen in the daytime. Just a guess. What does anyone else think? Berneta

        Thanks for the replies
I cant see how the CPAP can do any damage - i remember the dreadful morning feeling i used to have before i started on cpap - totally disoriented and groggy -
nowadays i feel calm, rested and happy although the side effects such as dry nose, dry eyes and shallow breathing are something i hope will pass away with time.
        Long live CPAP!
