  • Is using cpap without osa dangerous?

As it says in the title

Is using a cpap, if you no longer have osa, dangerous?
I know if you have osa and don't use it eventually it can cause serious problems.
Anyone know if it is the same the other way round?

It's as dangerous as deep breathing. Just don't stand on a crumbling cliff edge whilst doing it.

How do you feel the next day after a night without PAPing?

      CPAP without OSA?

      Hi Lorraine,

You have to ask yourself, would you put your leg in plaster if it wasn't broken? Would you use a wheelchair if you could walk perfectly well anyway? Would you take a course of anti-biotics if you were not feeling unwell? Of course you wouldn't; it would be utterly pointless.

It's all a matter of need and assessment of need. I believe your question arises from the poor support you are having from your local sleep clinician. Go on www.sleep-apnoea-trust.org.uk and from there you will find a list of sleep-clinics, alternatively, phone their helpline, it's on the web-site.

      regards

      Richard

I feel exactly the same as I do after a night with it.
Either way I wake up at least 6 times to go to the loo even though I don't need to pee.
Last night I put the pressure up to 16 to see if that made any difference, it didn't so at about 3.30am I changed it to 10 and that made no difference either so ended up at 6am taking it off.
I no longer dream so I feel like I am back to square one.

        Deep joy

          Bummer

Not quite square one Lorraine--you are thinner and that is worth something. Now you just need to start over with the OSA. 6 trips to the loo a night is a sign that you still need somekind of help. Keep up the spirits up-- and start over. I will be lighting a candle prayer for your success. xox Berneta

Are you able to grab an oximiter or some other way of seeing if your sleep is still affected in any way? Would be interesting to see if after a few nights without PAP your daytime life is any differenct and if your still sleeping OK - I guess a new sleep study would then give you an all clear and you can live mask free (!)

              Hi Lorraine

I would talk with your GP about getting up so often. Its something I used to do but found another underlying problem. Thats taken care of and I sleep through the night, well, until 4am at least!

I got a letter today from a hospital that I have not been to before asking me to make an appointment at their sleep clinic!!!!
I guess my GP did write to East Surrey (where I got my diagnosis and machine) and they must have said they didn't want to/;couldn't see me so he referred me on.
I have to say that I am very HAPPY!!!
No idea how long I will have to wait but at least I am gettnig somewhere at last.
It will be my very first sleep clinic appointment since I was diagnosed a year ago, it should be interesting

Ahh, but I have yet to call the hospital and find out they have a 6 month waiting list!

On another note, I hope Malta is warmer than it is here cos I don't like cold and snow and ice and stuff 2 weeks more of this and I get a nice week off. To take the cpap or not to take it, that is the question.

Oh TF, I know about not telling the airline and having it in my hand luggage (I am not bothered about taking an extra bag) BUT should I get a letter from GP just in case I am stopped at security etc? BTW am flying squeezy jet for the first time.

                        Ohhhhhhhhh!

Why do you suppose security are in the least bit interested in an air blower when you call it a CPAP when you know fine well they take no interest at all in an air blower called a hair dryer?

Wave a medical letter at Sqeezy and watch out!

If you are going out of Luton, security permit one piece of hand baggage per person only. Squeezy say they don't care and blame it all on security. As always, other airports have different policies under the security umbrella.

Oh! sending negative waves always extends waiting times. Sending positive waves often shorten them - especially if you call and say you'll accept a cancellation at (minimum possible) minutes notice.

                        Enjoy Malta!

ElleCee - hope the sleep clinic they're sending you to is the one attached to the Queen Vic in East Grinstead - you said before you were going to East Surrey so I assume you are in that sort of area. If so, it's a great clinic, very helpful.
