  • CPAP keeps stopping ?

Hi all, i wonder if anyone can help please.

I have a RESMED S9 with humidifier attached. Several times i have noticed that my cpap stops working in the middle of the night (the machine comes on e.g. lights up and then reboots and starts again) funny thing is i must be getting used to the cpap because when it stops i wake - is this normal -any advise welcome.

    Thanks.

    Hi Topgal!

I'm no expert but that doesn't sound right to me. As far as I know a CPAP should keep running until you switch it off when you get up in the morning.

If I were you I'd phone your clinic ASAP and let them know what's happening. If it is a fault as I suspect then they should offer you an emergency appointment where the machine can be checked and replaced if necessary.

Please let us know what the clinic says.

I may be new to CPAP but there is something wrong with your unit, it should not do that. Call for help from whoever you got the unit from.

Yes, that sounds buggered. Unless you had a powercut, or loose plug etc. check that too. Some machine have an automatic "mask off, power off" feature that causes the machine to stop when it detects no breathing in the mask. This can, in some, trick the machine falsely. But I agree, all in all, it sounds dodgy. It's not supposed to happen and is a mighty inconvenience. It's supposed to help you sleep, not wake you up.

          Cpap

Thanks, yes machine stopped again last night, light on cpap came on and air stopped then after 2-3 mins it seems to reboot and start up again. As a relatively new user to cpap (3 weeks) i suspected something might be wrong. I will give the company a call tomorrow and tell them what's happening. Appreciate you help, thanks.

            cpap stopping.

Hi I have had resmed from day one, it sounds like your machine is set on auto, this turns the cpap on and off automatically and if you get a leak or are using a nasal mask and your mouth falls open it will stop as it thinks you have taken your mask off.
If you set it to manual then you have to turn it on and off yourself and there is an alarm setting that makes it sound a tone if your mask leaks.
If this is not the case then it could be faulty but its worth checking before sending it back.
            Best of luck.
            Alex.

              Auto setup

Alex, thanks for your reply, at the sleep lab, they set up the machine so when i get into bed i just press the button to turn the machine on. I use a nasal mask, i have noticed the machine has not turned off the last two night so i am wondering if you have a point and is the machine turning off when either i open my mouth or have a mask leak ??? I have never done anything to the machine apart from fill it up with water each night and turn it on ????

Haven't contacted the company as yet, waiting to see if it happens again.

              Cheers.

                Keeps stopping.

Hi Topgal, I would think the problem has been found, my first Resmed had auto start/stop and I used to get mask leak from my nasal mask and through my mouth, the pressure was set too high this would blow the mask off or force your mouth open, the result is no therapy and worse your mouth is dried out so much it takes ages to get it feeling anything like acceptable. Now your CPAP is set to manual, if you have a leak episode the screen will show high leak, this will alert you to a problem and it only clears the screen when you start it once again, so check it particularly if your feeling tired.
Once you get used to how things work for you, then you can alter things to suit your needs, the experts seem to set my CPAP too high and it used to blast away regardless, the Resmed range is very efficient if set right and the auto pressure adjustment is excellent.
It should adjust the pressure within the set ranges as your sleep pattern alters and as you wake the pressure should have reduced to the minimum and not be blasting away.
A good test is put the mask on and let the CPAP settle down for a minute or two, then pretend to snore, the CPAP should raise the pressure to prevent the snoring, after a while if you have stopped snoring it reduces the pressure slightly to maintain your airway but not blast away for no reason.
If during use you wake normally and it is blasting away then it is not set correctly, (I bought my CPAP and in dealings with Resmed have had sound advice that has allowed me to adjust my CPAP to best effect) this lets you experince the way it works while you are awake; and understand what it is trying to achieve for your wellbeing, so correct settings, in my view are critical and no amount of experts can set it to suit your needs without monitoring you adequately and spending ages in consultation, it's just not practical for the NHS.
Sorry for the lengthy reply, I hope the information is helpful to you and others using Resmed CPAPs.
                Best of luck.
                Regards
                Alex.

Regards everyone and the CPAPers, hacker(s)!

                        Auto Set up

                        Hi Alex,

Thanks again for your reply and the information you have provided. As mentioned previously my machine was set up by the sleep lab to a pressure of 11 and it is on auto set. I just get into bed and press the button for it to come on. Maybe you are right in that i am either opening my mouth or having a mask leak and hence the machine is stopping. I will test it tonight and see if this is what is causing it to stop and reboot. I have tried to adjust my setting but it doesn't seem to allow me (well not that i can find how to). Anyway thanks again for reply - i will test the machine tonight with snoring and mask leak and see if this stops the machine and then i will know my answer. I will keep you posted.

                        Cheers.
