  • First Night for me Last night

I have recently been diagnosed with Obstructive Adult Sleep Apnea, it's a
scarey thought and I started the CPAP treatment last night, my consultant started me with nasal cushions which I found irritating and uncomfortable so I am now using a full nasal mask.

I am only 34 years old and thought I was relatively healthy but my sleep tests before diagnosis showed different.

I am hoping the CPAP helps and I can discover what it's like to wake up feeling refreshed. Wish me luck!! I hate anything on my face

    Godsart!

    Hi MysticNic

    Welcome to the forum!

Sounds like you are off to good start!

Does anyone like a plastic quadropus strapped to their face? It gets easier as long as you remember to keep the straps only just tight enough to hold the mask in place.

How many times have I tried to jump out of bed with the mask still on, completely forgot I was wearing it? Last time was this very morning when the postman woke me.

      Hi Nic,
Welcome to the place where you can find out anything Cpap. Feel free to ask away if you have any questions. This is also where you can have a moan or even open up a lively debate.
Pay much homage to James and Tom at Intus, they are the experts who are supposed to be more sophisticated. (Note the words 'supposed to be'.) If we can't answer a question there is a good chance that they can.

We have all been at the early stage when everything is new and a tad scarey.

Our friend Tigers Fan has been around a long time so make excuses for the poor soul.

      TF,
I can't say I have ever had a plastic cat strapped to my face (don't all cats have 4 legs?). I do however have a pink uniloxodonta.
      Help me someone...

        Defeated - again!

Quadropus is an octopus with four amputations.

Apart from a Sleepweaver, wot's a uniloxodonta? I bow before your blondness!

          Thanks

Thank you everyone for making me feel welcome in this new uncertain world.

Good news is hubby said I slept well last night and managed 4 hours straight sleep, still getting used to the whole nose breathing thing but I guess perseverance is a BIG word. I don't relish the thought of surgery so CPAP will have to start being my middle name.

          Thanks again.
          xx

            Hiya Nic

Welcome to the world of CPAP. You are completely right in what you say, in that PERSEVERANCE is a key word in the whole process. There are many people (you will come across the odd one here) who have given up after less than one night's usage. Then again there are plenty woh will swear by their CPAP equipment, and will actually find it difficult to get quality sleep now without CPAP.
Tigersfan correctly mentioned about getting mask strap tightness just right - you dont want it too tight, or too loose - the phrase I like to use is comfortable seal.
If your service provider has a goosd setup then hopefully they will have given you contact numbers etc that you can use if you have difficutlies etc

Finally, its good to hear that your hubbie suggested you slept well on 1st night. However, to some extent, its irrelevant. What is FAR more important is what you thought.... Did YOU think you slept better? Did You feel any different for having had 3-4 hrs better sleep?? After all, it YOU that has to use CPAP not him, and only benefit that YOU feel will make YOU keep wanting to use it!!
            Good luck and sleep sound!!

              Ups and Downs

Hi Nic, just wanted to say welcome and hang in there. It does take some time to get the straps just right. It took me about a week to really figure out how tight I wanted mine. Now and then I wake up and have taken it off for some reason--don't know why, I am the type who throws pillows and blankets on the floor now and then. I have also had a couple times that I woke up thinking I had taken it off--and it was still on my face working fine. So just hang in there--eventually you will get used to it. At first it kinda reminded me of the Alien in the movie. My hubby asked me what planet I was from the first time he saw it! (Maybe thats why I took it off?) LOL It just takes time--and determination. You'll get good advice here, Good Luck, Berneta
