  • new user- any advice welcomed

    Hi
I'm Rod, 52 years old, married and diagnosed with Sleep Apnea

I am new user of CPAP.....one week in and life is better already

I have a couple of irritations with machine and mask.
    Any advice would be welcomed
    a) 'sweaty annoyance' around mask ......any suggestions to alleviate?
    b) air on face can be very cold and unhelpful when trying to sleep......any tips to help?
    c) mask movement.......do any special pillows help?
    d) dry mouth.......does humidifyer work?
Can any accessories be purchased on UK Web site?.....if so any suggestions

    Thanks
    Rod

    Welcome Rod.

Sweaty annoyance - check out Remzzzs - they're great.

Air on face cold - outside mask - Remzzzs. Inside the mask - try and have room temperature a bit higher, insulate the hose (have seen both home made insulation, wrapping the hose in a towel and I believe that there is a commercially available heated hose cover. Me, I've got used to it and the Remzzzs protect me well enough from the cold air for the most part.

Mask movement - I haven't invested in a special pillow yet - but they seem like a good idea. I have had lots of problems with face movement and I seem to be a rule-breaker, because I like to have my full-face mask quite tight. Having it quite tight seems to be contrary to all of the advice and was darned uncomfortable until I discovered Remzzzs. Two reasons - I can have it tight without any discomfort - but also I have loosened it a bit and mask movement and leakage happens a bit more now, but I can't feel the leakage on my face because of ... you've guessed it ... the Remzzzs.

Dry mouth - does the humidifier work. Dunno, logic tells me it would - ask me next Thursday, I get my humidifier from the hospital on Wednesday 25th.

Accessories from the EU-PAP shop. Loads of people on here love the Pursleep aromatherapy kit - I've ordered one and should get it soon. Also, I use the CPAP wipes they sell, they're great.

And finally - WELCOME - this forum and website is a superb resource. I've been on CPAP myself for about 10 weeks now and it has changed my life for the better - despite being a challenging time. The help and encouragement I have received here has made it much easier for me.

    Cheers,

    Simon

PS. I am not on commission for Remzzzs .... hmmm, perhaps I should be though eh?

Simes2112 ... 2112 is the title of an album by Rush from 1976, it changed my life ... and now 33 years later CPAP is doing the same.

      Hi there,
Yes the humidifier is very good for stopping your mouth from drying out especial if you are a mouth breather, I found out how neccissary it was when mine ran out of water one night, it felt like my tounge was welded to the roof of my mouth. Try your hardest to get one, my NHS center supplied one no problem (Wythenshawe Hospital).

        What Simon says

And yes, the humidifier will help with b and d, you've answered c partly yourself, also check the Hose Lift as an affordable way to combat this.

As Jack says, a humidifier is always advisable so indeed, try and get one from the hospital.
