  • CPAP making my nose bleed in the mornings

Okay, I'm 10 days into my CPAP experiment, and mostly it's working - I've got the hang of the second mask they've given me (an Opus 360 nasal cussion), and am managing to keep it on all night through to the morning nearly every night now.

However, twice now, a few minutes after turning off the CPAP and removing the mask when I get up, one of my nostrils has started to bleed spontaneously.

Now, before you get massively alarmed here, I have to say I have always suffered from lots of nosebleeds ever since being a little kid, and often have traces of blood in the mucus I blow from my nose. Nosebleeds I understand, and have learned to live with them.

Obviously though, blowing pressurised air into my nose all night is affecting the capilleries in there, and the 'sudden' removal of the presure in the morning is causing the nosebleeds a few minutes later.

Is this common? Is it only a symptom of nasal cussion masks? Does ayone else get this? Should I be worried? Do I need to mention it to the sleep nurse at my next appointment?

Common? No. First I've heard of it in many years. Don't think it's necessarily related to the nasal pillow masks, but that's me guessing. If the bleeds stop like a "normal" nose bleed, I'd not be too worried. But do mention it, and if you don't have a humidifier yet, try and get one. It keeps everything up there a lot healthier.

Nosebleeds are not uncommon, especially with nasal pillows, particularly if you are at quite a high pressure or it is particularly cold. Saline nasal drops and a heated humidifier should help. Definitely mention it at your next appointment.
