I know this is not a real CPAP accessory but it is sort-of related, innit?

Short story: sleeping really well since I started CPAP, but maybe I sleep too much? I feel really stiff in the morning and I am considering a memory foam topper. Our mattress is very good quality, but maybe a bit firm... I never came across memory foam toppers before reading a post on back ache in the CPAP forums. I never knew they existed...

Can someone suggest something good? I saw a few links to Argos stuff at 20-25 quid. Someone else mentioned it is worth getting real good quality.

How much should I spend, and what specific product/company should I be looking at?

    TIA

If you are meaning a mattress overlay that looks like an egg box I went to the local disability shop to get the best they could offer. They were very helpful and put me in touch with the manufacturer from whom I bought.

I purchased a king size and probably paid here in New Zealand the equivalent of around £40. It is great.

My back kills me when I wake in the morning but my consultant tells me that is because I am lying still rather than thrashing around in bed. I guess the back needs educating as well as the lungs.

Happy sleeping. Hope you find the right overlay.

Yes and No, memory foam topper yes, egg box no. The thing I personally am thinking of is about 2 - 3 inches thick (that's about 6cm - 10cm for all you decimalised people) and completely smooth. It moulds to your body so that each part is correctly supported then returns to it's normal shape when you get off it.

Memory foam comes in certain variations of density. I believe it's expressed in KGs/cm2 or some other weight distributing ability measure. So when shopping around (though it's hardly ever listed) you may want to keep an eye on this. Especially if you are a tad heavy, you want good density so you don't simply squash the topper.

I had one, but my 165Kg was just to much for it, killed me back. It ended up under the normal mattress as it would not go back into the bag.

Hi, Just noticed this thread regarding foam mattress toppers.

There are basicallly two types of foam mattress topper. The cheaper of the two usually comes in the egg crate style and is made from a standard foam of the same type that you would get inside a standard sofa cushion. This would probably only give a very slight improvement over your existing mattress.

The better (and of course, more expensive kind!) are made from visco elastic memory foam and are usually smooth faced. Memory foam allows your body to be cushioned and supported evenly across its surface unlike the standard foam which can still create pressure points. I started using one last year and would not be without it now, in fact i will be buying a new bed later this year and will probably get a memory foam mattress rather than just the topper. This link shows the one I have. Memory Foam Mattress Topper

                  Hi,

I've purchase 3 memory foam toppers and density and depth is importance - around 3" seems about right (It really is better than 2). As to density i can't remember - but I think it's about 60lbs + for the better ones

                  two suppliers with some information:-

I got all of mine from ebay - they are a lot cheaper than the shops - but expect to pay £100 for a kingsize one.

I've got several of mine from :-
(and no I don't own the shop).

Oh and you can now get mattresses with memory foam built in (as well as full memory foam ones)

                  For example : http://www.mattressman.co.uk/mattres..._mattress.aspx

                        Memory Foam Pillows aswell!

                        Steve,
I found the Memory foam pillow to be a great help to. Dont buy any funny shape one, search out a normal looking one on E Bay, I found they are great and you can sleep at the edge and no interfearance with your mask.
Good luck, it worth a try.
