  • Power cut alarm?

I'm in the UK and wonder if there is a plug in alarm that will sound if the power goes out? I've seen ones advertised in the US, and could make one with a relay, battery, and buzzer -- but would rather buy one. I'm doing this research for a friend who lives in Poland with sleep apnea. Thanks all.

Thanks. yes, a bit over budget. I also know about computer UPS's which are an option if I can't find anything simple.

The operation of this alarm is similar to PF-01. A power adaptor is used to monitor mains power via a control circuit. The control circuit has battery backup via a PP3 9 Volt battery and is connected to a radio transmitter. If mains power fails or the power adaptor is removed from the mains socket the transmitter sends a signal to the pager.

With an operating transmission range of up to 100M, this versatile alarm has many applications. Vital electrical appliances where power loss can prove expensive and inconvenient can easily be monitored.

That would work, provided the pager is loud enough to wake the sleeper. Still a bit more complicated that something like a relay and a loud battery driven buzzer--which may not exist. Thanks for your leads.

It may say 'pager' but it looks like and perhaps they mean something like a doorbell. If you stick that black receiver (doorbell-like) next to your head on the bed, it should be loud enough. Perhaps worth a call to clarify.

I agree with Joe - give them a bell first!

Might be worth trawling through the Maplin website - they seem to have all sorts of ready made stuff nowadays.

You could also try speaking to R F Potts of Derby, on 01332 343469, [email protected]. They appear to be able to supply pretty much anything.

Some Electricity Companies (I think Southern is one) have a procedure in place to call you on a mobile number if there is a power outage (planned or otherwise), you just have to register...

I think the damage is already done by the time that happens. Every time I've had a powercut and rung the provider immediately, I was almost always the first to make them aware of one.

A severe sleep apnoea patient probably prefers not to wait 10-60 minutes for a call.

Very often when a local transformer or power line comes down, the power company has not a clue of anything wrong until they are called. A few years ago ice droped a power line near here, half a dozen houses blacked out. No one thought to call the power company, three days later a passing power worker spotted the downed line.

Thanks all of you. I've passed on what information I've collected and it's up to them to decide which product they will go with. Wish I were there (in Poland) to just knock a relay/bell/battery together which would save them some loot.
