Hi everyone
My humidifier container broke recently when I was taking it apart to empty the remaining water. I had to book an emergency appointment at the clinic for the following day which luckily I had already booked off work.
The sleep technician called me through from the waiting area and in the consultation room I explained that the bar which holds the metal plate in place just snapped off when I pressed the tabs to remove it. The technician inspected the container and asked me; how long I'd had it, how I cleaned it and whether or not I was using distilled water.
I'd had the humidifier for several months. I cleaned the container (along with the mask) once a week using baby shampoo and a soft toothbrush, and I use tap water filtered through an Aqua Optima filter jug because I couldn't find a local shop selling distilled water.
I was expecting to be lectured for not cleaning the container correctly and/or not using distilled water, so imagine my surprise when the technician told me he was only asking because he'd never seen a humidifier container which was so clean after several months! He seemed genuinely surprised that I hadn't experienced any problems with filtered water and wanted to know the filter brand I was using so he could recommend it to other patients who were also struggling to find distilled water.
If any newbies out there are unsure about cleaning their humidifier & mask, and/or if you're concerned about using filtered water instead of distilled water, I'd recommend that you try my approach and see if it works for you. If nothing else at least I've made a sleep technician happy...
Cheers
