    Hi Silvercarper,

To help make my experience as good as possible I always, just before going to bed use fresh clean ice cold water. I find if the water is left in for any time it gets tainted with the air around it. I also use a room freshener spray or a linen spray (Not an air freshener) when not at home, it doesn't directly affect the machine but it helps it to smell more like it does at home.
I don't know if that will help but I hope you get a good result soon !
    regards

Thanks Gabbiejo - I'm looking at getting bedside cabinets which will allow me to put the CPAP inside, although not the purpose built ones you referred to.

Silvercarper: thanks, I'm going to try the cotton ball solution tonight.

ElleCee: the height matter is to stop any condensation running into the mask, but that may be less of a problem as the days get warmer. The other reason is if you have a separate humidifier and CPAP that the CPAP must be above the humidifier to avoid getting water into the machine.
It was me , not silvercarper writing about the oils, and your suggestion about a room spray when away from home is one I'll take up, although I'm loaded down like a packhorse when working away as it is one little spray isn't going to add too much.

However I'm a bit surprised when you say you use clean ice-cold water - I hope that is sterilised by boiling and then cooled, not straight from the tap?

At the hospitals they use distilled water which protects you from microbes and the machine from particulates which might reduce its life. I was told that cooled boiled water was acceptable, it just means I have an extra job of cleaning the water tank every week with a mild white vinegar solution to get rid of the "fur", as I live in a hard water area.

The water in the humidifier should be emptied every morning and the hose disconnected as warm, moist air could permeate through the machine resulting in unpleasant bacteria growing in places which cannot be cleaned.

I use filtered water and dont have any limescale in the humidifier.
The water in my area is hard which suits my Cichlids but not my humidifier.

          Hmmm,
I was told by the hospital not to waste money on distilled water as tap water was just as good.I did actually question it at the time but was assured it was the right thing to do. I was not even allowed to use distilled water whilst I was in hospital.
I have been using my machine since Jan with a humidifier and I wash out the humidifier every day and only once have I had to use a little vinegar to remove a feint white mark on the inside. We don't get limescale here so I guess I am lucky. I am meticulous with cleaning everything, daily and on a bigger scale weekly and have had no problems.
I am of the mind that there is no hard and fast rule and we all do as our specialists tell us, give or take the odd small exception where experience may tell us otherwise.
I have never suffered from rainout so keeping my machine on the bedside table seems like the right thing for me to do, and maybe I don't have rainout because I like cold air and don't use the heat part of the humidifier.
          Just my thoughts
