  • Sleep Apnea + Mental Health

    Hi all.

It's my first time posting so hope this is OK.

I've recently been diagnosed with mild OSA but I haven't been deemed to need a CPAP. Told to lose some weight (BMI 33) and reassess symptoms.

I've been experiencing excessive daytime sleepiness for years now. I often wake up gasping for air / choking and I can't remember the last time I felt like I'd had a sound sleep waking up refreshed.

One thing I have noticed is my mental health decline. I've had 2 previous episodes of anxiety and depression (pretty severe with intrusive/suicidal thoughts) leading to 2 seperate occasions over the last 3 years of being on medication.

I've never suffered with MH issues before, and I'm wondering whether Sleep Apnea is a contributing factor, and whether anyone here is in a similar position with having never experienced depression but once Sleep Apnea has been prevalent it has reared its head.

Has anyone experienced an improvement in their poor mental health following CPAP usage?

I'm trying to get a CPAP based on my general sleepiness and excessive fatigue / tiredness - is there anything I could say to my GP to push this along. As the diagnosis letter stated at this stage they won't be providing a CPAP and it seems the sleep clinic have effectively wrote off my sleepiness symptoms as not being due to Mild OSA...

    Any help is really appreciated.
