  • ReMed Airsense 10 high pressure on start

I have been using a CPAP machine for 5 years now. I was given an Airsense 10 by the NHS in January last year and I use a full face mask (Resmed Airtouch F20) which have a memory foam seal and it is very effective.

Since the end of last year i have had a problem. When I turn it on it gushes full blast so that it nearly lifts the mask off my face. I try to reset it but no difference..I have spoken to the sleep nurse and have tried a new pipe, water chamber, mask and I now have a new machine but it is just the same.

To begin with this machine was like my old one and would start at low pressure and build.up.to a comfortable level. My breathing can be shallow so sometimes I has to exaggerate my breathing pattern so it would settle down. There are no leaks anywhere and the mask is a good fit. Does anyone have any ideas what is wrong as I sense the sleep nurse is put of her depth.

    Good Morning,

    Thank you for your post.

Can I kindy ask if your Airsense10 is an auto or fixed pressure machine? Do you know what settings the machine is set to? Lower and upper pressure or what the prescribed pressure is if you have a fixed machine.

If you pop your mask on first to get a good seal and then turn the machine on, does the pressure still come through at a high pressure?

Do you have a ramp setting on your machine? If so do you know how long this is set to.

If you could let me know then I will see what I can do to help.

      Hi Kelly

Thank you for your reply. Mine is the autoset model so I can either set the ramp time myself or set it Auto. This makes no difference to the problem.

The pressure is set at 4.0 to 20.0. When i put the mask on and turn the machine on it is at instant high pressure. It is so powerful it can lift the mask off of my face.

The machine used to start automatically but this was turned off by the nurse as she thought this might help. Unfortunately it didn't.

        Good Afternoon,

Thank you for your reply. Can you ensure any ramp (std or smart) is off on the machine as this may be causing the issue.

Do you get a good seal / fit with your airtouch F20 mask?

Thanks Kelly. I wasn't aware you could turn the ramp off entirely. I will try that. Yes I get a good fit with the mask and usually get a 20/20 score for mask fit overnight.

            Hi,

Try turning off the ramp completely and see if this resolves the issue.

Normally the mask is the main cause of increased pressure, but if you get a good fit / seal with the mask at the start of therapy and the pressure is high then this is more likely to be the machine.

Please let me know how you get on.

            Kelly

              Hi Kelly

Ramp setting turned off completely but it is no different. I personally believe that it is a settings fault as i swapped my machine for another one because of the issue and it is just the same.

                Good Morning,

Thank you for your reply and the update.

I would suggest one of the following as the machine should not be on high pressure when you start your CPAP therapy.

                1. Contact your hospital and ask them to look at your machine / settings / data
                2. Contact Resmed directly and ask them to see what they advise as they are the manufacturer - https://www.resmed.co.uk/contact/
                3. Create a free account on https://sleephq.com/ and upload the data from your SD card and then you should be able to email me a report at [email protected] and I will see if I can get our clinical team to have a look at your data to see what is going on.

Thanks Kelly. I am seeing the Nurse responsible next Monday and I will report back, hopefully with a solution.

                      Hi Kelly

My appointment last week was postponed and I am now going to the clinic tomorrow.

I have downloaded Oscar and have been able to extract the results from my SD Card. The one thing that seems to stand out is that the pressure of my machine starts at 6 and stays that way all night. Is this normal? It does not vary even when I have OA or HA episodes.

                        Good Morning,

                        Thank you for your post.

Can you email me the data - [email protected] and I will have a look.

Do you know what settings your CPAP machine is set up with? Ie lower pressure and upper pressure on an auto CPAP machine.

Do you have a smart ramp enabled?

                        Kelly
