  • Quattro leak rate

    Hi everyone,
i am getting confused about my leak rate. I have an average leak rate for the last week of 0.5 L/per second. I have just read some stats on an American list that says that this is way too high, but my mask says each morning Maask Fit: 5 stars and excellent. Anyone know what i am missing?

Why do they have to make things so complicated? it seems that the ***** stars and excellent reading that i have been getting is a reading based on 70% of the night. The 0.5 L/Per second is based on 95% of the night. So (I have been told) it is possible that I had (as an example) Excellent for 70%, which is leaks of less than 0.18, then good for say 20%, and then poor for 5% and that would, or could fgve a reading of 0.5l/s.
I spoke to the Resmed rep and she seemed to think that if the leaks are normally less that 0.4 and occasionally go up, that it is probably caused by me moving around at night, from my side to my back.

          Does that make sense?

            Hi Brian
I also have a Ressmed S8 Auto Spirit II. My leak rate is also high 0.48L/s. My lab technician is telling me they expect that to be around 0.2. I have been using a Mirage Swift II but last night tried the Activa after I woke around 11.30.

I have been using this machine 11 nights and am surprised by the results. It took me a few days to settle into it and then I had 3 or 4 nights good sleep with few AHI but the last two nights have been disastrous with a very much increased number of incidents. Last night in the first hour of sleep I had 22 AHIs when 3 nights ago I averaged 5. Because of this and the high leakage rate I decided to change to the Activa mask around minight but found this morning the leak rate was still 0.42L/s. I really did not think the mask leaked. I also taped my mouth to try to avoid leakage.

If you are in touch with Resmed is there a chance of your asking if there is a problem with the setting of the machine. I am in New Zealand and Resmed I believe are in Australia.

Or is it just coincidence that we both have a similar problem?
            Cheers Retsyo

              Hiya Retsyo,
Resmed UK say that they have not had any reports of any problems with the settings. They also said that the ideal leak rate is 0.4 or less as the machine is made to compensate for that. She also said that it will cope with more. She also confirmed what i had been told in my last mail: If your readout in the morning says ***** and excellent for mask fit, then you have had leaks of less 0.18 for 70% of the night, so be happy. She told me that varying leaks rates over a period of days tend to suggest that the problem is either a bad fit caused by moving in your sleep and disturbing the mask. Consistantly high leaks (everyday) suggest a possible mask problem. Seemingly I had quite a few nights with no AI and very few HI. One night I had 0.8 leaks, which is way too high, but because it was only once, she said that i should ignore it. I have had nights with an average pressure of 8.4. The highest i have had is 11.8. last night I had the worst night for some time and this morning the leak rate was 0.34, AHI 5.1 and pressure 11.2. Figure that out.

I think that we have got to learn to review the results over a period of time and not expect to hit paydirt every morning.... Listen to me, a few weeks ago I was asking for help to turn the 'effin machine on!
